A Network of Pens : Punk, Friendships & Community

One fall afternoon while walking in the Mission district of San Francisco a few old friends starting chatting about letters (what we now call “snail mail”) and the fact that they had tons of letters saved from years ago when they were very active in the independent punk music scene, particularly between 1984-1987. Why had we kept them? Why co…uldn’t we throw them away? The answer is obvious, because they are an important part of our lives and documentation of important friendships and relationships.

Then we thought, there must be a lot of people that still have these letters. Wouldn’t it be amazing to collect them together and put out a book that not only commemorates the international underground punk scene from 1984-1987 (a period that is under-represented in punk rock memorabilia) but more importantly, documents the important ideas, friendships and connections that were made between people all over the world at that time. With pens and paper.

This is where you come in: We want your letters. But we don’t want just any letters. We want letters that have more than just “I saw DRI” etc. We are looking for letters that both connect to the 1984-1987 ‘punk’ scene and also refer to issues and relationships that are important to you.

1) Please e-mail 3 letters you think would be of interest- they must be scanned and at least 300 dpi TIFF files to: acrofish@gmail.com

2) Please e-mail a reflection on each letter that emphasizes how this letter made you think about friendships, connections, and community and how it holds relevance in your life right now. Make sure you indicate which letter you are reflecting on.

3) If you have an e-mail with the writers “ok you can print that” please e-mail that as well.

4) If you have any flyers, art, photos, news / fanzine clippings, etc. that pertain to the content, please also e-mail that.

We will contact you ASAP as to the status of your submission and the progression of the book.

Keep on the lookout for a blog to document our progress.
